NOTES

West Kent Quarter Sessions records for 1790 name Samuel PEIRSON (sic - also spelt PEARSON in the same record), farmer of Yalding and son of George PEIRSON farmer, as the father of the illegitimate daughter of Jane OBEY of Yalding, singlewoman.

A Samuel PEARSON also appears in the West Kent Quarter Sessions records for Epiphany 1797 as reputed father of the illegitimate daughter* of Ann SAVAGE of Yalding, the child apparently having been born about 27 weeks previously. However, I am not sure if this relates to the above Samuel PIERSON (So35) or not. Parish register transcripts for Yalding show the baptism of a Samuel Pierson, illegitimate son* of Ann SAVAGE, on 17 Jul 1796. (* As these two records would appear to relate to the same child, one of them is presumably incorrect.)

At her marriage in 1793, and at two of her children's baptisms in Linton, Jane OBEY's forename was given as Jenny.

There is a memorial to the BURGESS family in Linton churchyard which records the deaths of William (senior), his wife Jane (So35), and their daughters Susannah (sic), Mary and Elizabeth, all of whom, except Elizabeth, were buried in Linton. William, Robert, Ann and Frances are also mentioned as surviving sons and daughters, and at the bottom is a note that the stone was erected by Robert. This was presumably after Jane had died in 1855, and thus some years after the deaths of Susanna and Mary, which may account for the incorrect years of death given for them.

An index to Mid Kent Poor Law records lists a Bastardy Order (Marden, 11 Sep 1794) on William BURGESS of Yalding, labourer, for the son of Avis MARCH, born at Marden 20 Apr 1794.

The surname PIERSON is sometimes spelt PEARSON, the surname OBEY is sometimes spelt OBY, and variant spellings of the surname BURGESS include BURGES and BURGIS.
