NOTES

The SMARTs were a Quaker family and the information above comes from wills, Quaker records & "A brief account of the Ancient Inhabitants of Grittleton, taken from the Court Rolls" (1740). The death of Mary SMART (J255) was recorded in the Chippenham Monthly Meeting register and Daniel's burial (1744) in the Stanton St Quintin parish register.

Edward SMART (J254) is mentioned as a "suffering Quaker" having spent 3 months in prison in 1684 for refusing to take the Oath of Allegiance.

The surname SMART is sometimes spelt SMARTE.
